Tummy Tuck Recovery: Week-by-Week Timeline in Mumbai (2026)
What the first night, the first month and the first year of tummy tuck recovery usually look like, including drains, posture, swelling and when exercise is realistic.

A tummy tuck is a bigger recovery than liposuction because the muscle layer and the skin both need time. I would rather you plan six quiet weeks properly than try to be back to normal in ten days.

Most people can walk the day of a tummy tuck, return to desk work in about two weeks, and start structured exercise around six weeks, once the wound and the muscle repair have been checked. Swelling and the scar keep changing for several months. The dates below are a typical pattern at The Sculptique Aesthetics in Khar West, Mumbai. Your own plan depends on whether the operation was a mini or a full abdominoplasty, whether liposuction was added, and how the wound is healing.

This is a guide to what recovery usually involves. It does not replace the instructions you are given after surgery. If you have fever, sudden swelling of one leg, chest pain, or a wound that is opening or draining more than expected, contact the clinic the same day.
The first 72 hours
You leave theatre with a dressing and a compression garment. Many full tummy tucks also have one or two drains, which collect fluid so it does not sit under the skin. You will be asked to walk, with help, the same day. Walking protects against clots. You will not be asked to stand fully upright.
Sleep with your hips and knees slightly bent, so the incision is not pulled tight. A recliner or a wedge of pillows works. Pain is usually a deep tightness rather than a sharp cut, and it is managed with the medicines prescribed for you. Opioid tablets slow the bowel, so ask before the operation what to do if you have not opened your bowels by day two or three.
Week 1
The garment stays on except for washing, if you have been shown how to do that safely. Drains, when used, often come out in this week once the output has fallen. You can shower once the team says the dressings allow it. Short walks at home are useful. Lifting anything heavier than a full kettle, including a child, is not.
You will still be slightly bent at the waist. Forcing yourself straight stretches a fresh muscle repair. Numbness of the lower abdomen is expected, because small skin nerves are divided when the skin is lifted. Feeling returns slowly, and a patch above the scar can stay dull for many months.
Week 2
Bruising fades. Swelling is still obvious, especially by evening. Many people in desk jobs go back in the second week if the commute is short and they can stand and sit carefully. A long drive, or a day on your feet, is still early. The incision should be dry. A small spot of fluid is different from a wound that is red, hot and widening. Send a photograph to the clinic if you are unsure.
Weeks 3 and 4
Posture gradually straightens. Swelling becomes uneven: one side, or the area above the scar, can look fuller for a few days and then settle. This is ordinary lymphatic swelling, provided it is not painful, red or suddenly larger. Light walking can increase. Core work, crunches, yoga twists and heavy household lifting wait until you are cleared, which is commonly around six weeks when a muscle repair was done.
If liposuction was done at the same time, the flanks and back can feel firm or woody. That firmness softens over one to three months. Manual massage is only useful if your surgeon has asked for it and shown you the pressure to use.
Week 6 to month 3
This is when most people are allowed to build exercise back: walking first, then lower-body work, then core, in that order. The scar is pink and firm. Silicone and sun protection matter more than any cream that promises to erase a scar. A tummy tuck scar sits low, inside the underwear line, but it is permanent. Its job is to be flat and pale, which takes 12 to 18 months.
The abdomen you see at six weeks is not the final abdomen. Swelling over the muscle repair can hide definition until the third month, and sometimes longer if you had a large weight loss or a combined mommy makeover.
How mini, full and combined operations differ
| Operation | What is tight | Usual desk work | Usual exercise clearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini tummy tuck | Lower skin, shorter scar, muscle repair only if needed | Often 7–10 days | Often 4–6 weeks |
| Full tummy tuck | Skin from the ribs down, plus muscle repair | About 2 weeks | About 6 weeks |
| Tummy tuck with liposuction | Skin, muscle and fat on the waist | About 2 weeks | About 6 weeks, garment longer |
| Mommy makeover | Abdomen plus breasts | 2–3 weeks | Staged by the slowest area |
A fuller comparison of the operations themselves is in mini tummy tuck versus full abdominoplasty and tummy tuck surgery in Mumbai. Muscle separation on its own is covered in diastasis recti repair.
What slows recovery
Smoking and nicotine pouches reduce blood supply to the skin flap. We ask patients to stop well before surgery and to stay stopped while the wound is healing. A weight that is still moving, a cough, or an early return to gym core classes can pull a muscle repair. A seroma, a pocket of fluid under the skin, is the complication we watch for most often after the drains are out. It is usually treated in the clinic. It is a reason to keep the review appointments even when you feel well.
Frequently asked questions
Most people sleep with the hips and knees bent for one to two weeks, then gradually flatten as the skin feels less tight. Forcing a flat position in the first days pulls on the incision and the muscle repair.
Lifting a toddler is the restriction people underestimate. If a muscle repair was done, plan help with lifting for about six weeks. A brief cuddle on your lap, with someone else doing the lift, is different from carrying a child up stairs.
The nerves to the skin between the navel and the scar are stretched or divided when the skin is raised. Tingling and itching in the second month are often the nerves waking up. A numb patch can remain. It does not mean the muscle repair has failed.
Shape is readable by three months. The scar and the last of the swelling take closer to a year. Photographs in the same light, at one month, three months and one year, are more honest than a mirror check every morning.
