Chin Implant vs Genioplasty: Which Chin Surgery Fits Your Profile?
When a silicone chin implant is enough, when moving the chin bone is the better operation, and how either one sits with rhinoplasty.

A small or moderate increase in chin projection is often an implant. A chin that is short, long, or uneven usually needs the bone moved. I decide that from your profile and your bite, not from a filter.
— Dr. Aamod Rao
A chin implant adds a shaped piece of silicone in front of the chin bone and pushes the profile forward. A genioplasty cuts the chin bone and moves it, then fixes it with a small plate. The implant is the shorter operation and it can be reversed. The bone move can change height as well as projection, and it can correct a tilt. Filler can rehearse a small change for a year or two. It is not a substitute for either operation if the chin is structurally short.

The implant operation, sizes and scars are set out in chin implant surgery in Mumbai. Filler as a trial is compared in jawline filler versus chin implant. This article is the fork between implant and bone.
What each operation changes
Implant. Through a short incision under the chin, or sometimes inside the mouth, a pocket is made on the bone and the implant sits in it. Projection increases. Width can increase a little if the implant is shaped for that. The height of the chin, the vertical length, does not really change. The bite does not change. If you dislike it, it can be removed. The trade is a device: it can shift if the pocket is wrong, it can feel palpable in a very thin face, and over many years the bone under a implant can remodel slightly. Those are reasons to size it modestly and to seat it properly, not reasons to avoid it when the problem is simple projection.
Genioplasty. The chin bone is cut, slid, and fixed. It can come forward, and it can be shortened or lengthened vertically. Asymmetry, one side longer than the other, is a bone problem more than an implant problem. Swelling is greater and lasts longer than with an implant, because bone was cut. The plate stays unless it bothers you. The move is not something you take out the way you take out an implant. It is the more powerful operation, and it is more operation than a small deficiency needs.
A jaw that does not meet, a bite that is clearly off, or a chin that is part of a larger jaw deformity may need orthognathic surgery with an orthodontist, not a genioplasty disguised as a cosmetic chin. We will say if that is the situation. We do not move the chin to hide a bite that should be treated properly.
Choosing from the profile, not the trend
| Finding | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mild or moderate lack of projection, good chin height | Implant | Adds what is missing, reversible, shorter recovery |
| Chin is short vertically, or too long | Genioplasty | Implants do not change height in a controlled way |
| Chin points to one side | Genioplasty | The bone can be rotated. An implant sits on the asymmetry |
| You want to preview a small change first | Filler, then a decision | Filler is temporary and cannot mimic a large move |
| Large move plus a nose that also dominates the profile | Chin surgery and rhinoplasty, planned together | The nose and chin set each other. Doing one in isolation can look unfinished |
| Bite is abnormal | Assessment beyond a cosmetic chin | Cosmetic sliding will not fix the teeth |
Standing in profile, we look at the chin against the lips and the nose. A weak chin makes a normal nose look large. That is why rhinoplasty and chin surgery are so often one plan. If you only reduce the nose and leave a receding chin, the profile can still look unbalanced, and you will think the nose was under-corrected. We would rather show you that on a photograph before either operation is booked.
Recovery, compared honestly
An implant is often a few days of social downtime, a week before you feel ordinary at work, and a few weeks before the gym returns. Swelling at the point of the chin is the part that makes the result look too strong in week one. It settles. Numbness of the lower lip and chin skin can happen because the nerve exits near the pocket. It is usually temporary. It is mentioned before surgery because "usually" is not "always".
A genioplasty swells more, bruises more, and the chin feels wooden for longer. Diet is soft while the incision inside the mouth, if that approach was used, is healing. The result is judged at a few months, not at stitch removal. Lip numbness is a similar nerve story, with a similar warning.
Neither operation is a jawline liposuction. If the complaint is fat under the chin and the bone is already in the right place, the operation is under the chin, not on it. Double chin removal is that separate question. A V-shaped jawline achieved by taking bone from the angles of the jaw is also a different operation from a chin implant, and it is the subject people are often actually searching when they say "V-line". Read V-line surgery if the goal is a narrower lower face rather than a stronger profile.
Frequently asked questions
In a very thin chin, a large implant can be felt at the edge. A correctly sized implant on a chin with normal soft tissue is felt only if you go looking for it. If feeling an edge is unacceptable to you, that belongs in the consultation, because it may push us toward a smaller implant or toward moving the bone instead.
The bone can be moved again, which is another operation, another plate, and another recovery. It is not reversed the way an implant is removed in a short procedure. That difference is the reason we do not use a genioplasty for a change you are unsure about.
The aim is a chin that moves and a smile that does not. Swelling and temporary nerve numbness can make the lower lip feel stiff for weeks. A smile that stays uneven after the swelling has gone needs a review. It is uncommon. It is not something we shrug at.
Yes, but plan both before you do either, even if you stage the surgery. The projection we choose for the chin depends on the nose you are going to have, not only the nose you have today.
Look at height and projection as separate numbers
Bring a side photograph taken in daylight, and be ready for us to look at your bite. If the only missing piece is forward projection, a chin implant is likely the conversation. If the chin is long, short or crooked, we talk about moving the bone. Either way the nose is in the same photograph, and we will tell you if leaving it out will waste the chin surgery.
