Flying After Plastic Surgery: When You Can Travel Home to or from Mumbai

How soon patients usually fly after a nose job, breast surgery, liposuction, a tummy tuck or a BBL, and how to plan the stay in Mumbai around that date.

I would rather change your ticket than clear a long flight you are not ready for. The limit is swelling, wound healing, and whether you can walk and sit safely for the hours you have booked.

— Dr. Aamod Rao

There is no single day on which everyone may fly. A short domestic hop a week after eyelid surgery is a different problem from a fourteen-hour flight ten days after a tummy tuck or a Brazilian butt lift. The date is set at your review, from how you are walking, how the wound looks, and what the seat will demand of you. Book a changeable return. The patients who get into trouble are the ones whose ticket is the thing that makes the medical decision.

Consultation for patients travelling to Mumbai

The Sculptique Aesthetics sees people from Mumbai and from overseas. If you are organising the trip itself, start with the international patients page, then use the windows below to hold the hotel nights before you pay for a fare you cannot move.

What a flight actually asks of a fresh operation

A cabin is dry, you sit, your feet swell, and getting up is awkward. Three medical issues follow from that.

Clots. Any operation, any anaesthetic, and then a long sit, raise the risk of a deep vein thrombosis. The protection that belongs in every plan is walking the aisle when the seatbelt sign allows, drinking water, and using the compression you were given if it is a garment or stockings. Medicines that thin the blood are a prescription for a specific patient. They are not something to start from an article.

Swelling and wounds. Cabin pressure and a day of sitting increase swelling. A wound that is still draining, a haematoma that has not been seen, or a cast that needs to come off in our clinic should not be at altitude. The first review exists so those things are checked on the ground.

Position. A tummy tuck wants you slightly flexed, not folded into a tight seat for twelve hours. A BBL wants you off the grafted fat. A nose job wants you not to knock the bridge with a bag in a crowded row. If the operation and the seat disagree, the stay gets longer.

Planning windows we actually use

These are typical intervals before a long-haul flight, assuming an uncomplicated recovery and a review before you go. They are not clearance. Clearance is a person looking at you.

OperationOften reasonable to discuss a long flightWhat usually has to be true first
Upper eyelid surgery, chin implant, ear pinningAbout 5–7 daysWound checked, vision comfortable, no expanding bruise
RhinoplastyAbout 7–10 daysCast plan agreed, bleeding settled, you can breathe well enough
Breast augmentation or breast liftAbout 7–10 daysWalking easily, no tense swelling, garments sorted for the seat
Liposuction of a modest areaAbout 7–10 daysGarment fits, you can walk the aisle, drainage has stopped
Tummy tuck or mommy makeoverAbout 14 days, sometimes longerDrains out, walking upright enough for the seat, pain controlled without strong sedating tablets
Brazilian butt liftOften longer than 2 weeksYou have a real plan to keep pressure off the graft for the whole flight

A two-hour domestic flight is easier than a nonstop to London, New York or Sydney. We still want a review first. "It is only Goa" is how a haematoma gets discovered in another city.

If the operation is a BBL, read sleeping after a BBL before you assume a neck pillow solves a long-haul seat. It does not. Staying in Mumbai until sitting is allowed is the cleaner plan. The sitting rules are in when you can sit after a BBL.

How to book the trip

Hold the hotel through the review visit, plus two extra nights you can cancel. Put the consultation and the operation on the early part of the stay, not the day after you land from a long flight, so you are not being assessed while jet-lagged and swollen from travel. Schedule the first wound check before the departure date, in the clinic, not in an airport lounge.

Tell us if you have had a clot before, if you are on hormones, or if you cannot walk far. Those facts move the date more than the operation name does. On the day, take the prescription list in your cabin bag, the garment, and the clinic number. A letter for security, describing the implants or the garments, is something we can prepare if you ask before the week of travel.

Patients who live in India and are flying home to another city need the same logic. Distance is the issue, not the passport. A tummy tuck patient going to Delhi at day five is still a tummy tuck patient at day five.

After you land

Walk as soon as you can. Swelling will be up the next morning. That is expected if the wound is dry and you are well. A calf that is swollen on one side, chest pain, or breathlessness is an emergency department problem, not a message to answer in the morning. Fever or a wound that opens after a long flight also needs a local surgeon if you are already overseas. We will coordinate. We cannot examine you through a photograph as thoroughly as a doctor in the room with you, and we will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Feeling fine is not the test. Bleeding, a clot, and a wound problem declare themselves over the first several days, which is why the first review happens before a long flight. Two days is early for almost every operation on this list.

It makes it easier to shift position. It does not remove pressure from the graft if you sit back on it for ten hours. Unless you can genuinely kneel or lie so the buttocks are free, and you have practised that, we still want you in Mumbai.

A long train journey has the same sitting problem and fewer chances to walk. Treat it like a flight of the same duration.

After we have seen you and the recovery matches the ticket, yes. We will not write one to satisfy an airline if the examination does not support it.

Fix the ticket around the review, not the other way round

Tell us which operation you are considering and which city you are flying back to. We will give you a stay length to plan around, and we will lengthen it at the review if healing asks for that. Rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction and BBL do not share one travel date.
